Safe Lock - KPN (2017-2018)

The Netherlands is a small country with more bikes than people. In recent years we are seeing an increase in serious bike accidents involving mobile phone usage. For children as many as 1 in 5 accidents involve mobile phone usage. As a telecom provider, KPN wants to take its responsibility and contribute towards raising awareness that cycling and using your phone don’t go together anymore.

That's why they developed Safe Lock: a smart bicycle lock that is linked to an app which blocks the smartphone user’s network as soon as the bicycle is unlocked. Instead of opening and closing the lock with a key, the cyclist uses the app to do so. As soon as the lock is opened, the app sends a signal to the KPN network so that data as well as voice communication is temporarily blocked, with the exception of the alarm number 112. As soon as the app is used to lock the bicycle, the user once again has complete use of his or her smartphone.

Never before has a telecom brand taken the step to actually block their cellular network to improve the safety of its users.

The Safe Lock and app have been developed for Android as a first product and will be available at all KPN Stores by the end of 2018. After this launch, the development for the iOS app will commence.
